Dr. Guy Meadows, (PhD, MSc, BSc, NLC)

Director: Sleep, Stress, Fitness and Health

Guy grew up on the edge of Dartmoor in South Devon, where he cultivated his passion for the outdoors, at school he was given huge opportunities to explore his talents as a long distance runner, kayaker and climber as well as excel in his chosen subjects of the sciences and art (inherited from his father and a talent he maintains today).

At university in South Wales he studied Sports Science and was lucky enough to be taught by an dynamic tutor who initiated projects in high altitude physiology and extremes of exercise, whilst maintaining his sporting efforts Guy progressed to travelling around the UK and Europe climbing everything he could find.  A First in Sports Science was not quite enough for Guy however, so he moved to London for the first time in 1999 to study at Kings College, London for a Masters in Human and Applied Physiology a course which was heavily practically based with a variety of physical extremes being tested.

Guy’s end of year thesis introduced him to a fascination with brain and blood flow stressors with a project on the effects of reduced oxygen on brain blood flow.  A Distinction in his Masters enabled Guy to gain a prestigious Doctorate position at Imperial College, London based in the National Heart and Lung Institute at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

There his PhD involved monitoring the effects of disturbed sleep on the brain blood flow of healthy volunteers and then observing the cerebral effects of patients with heart disease and sleep apnoea.  During this time he realised that lifestyle factors were highly significant to these patients and that approaching health from only one angle would not help to achieve a lasting result, and so the concept of Lifecheck Health was formed.

Guy has continued to diversify his sporting interests in recent years, realising that his swimming was not as good as it could have been (or in his words “I don’t think I could save myself if a boat went down!”) he learnt to swim properly and has since competed in sprint triathlons, an Olympic triathlon and in 2007 in the UK Ironman (also his first marathon race).  He continues to climb, currently training for a trip to Yosemite in 2008, and loves to walk in the hills around his house in Llanberis, North Wales.
